Head injury and taking MTX Options

Hi everyone

My daughter, the one with RA and Bronchiectasis, has managed to have a punting accident with her uni friends and hit her head. She had a CT scan at the weekend which fortunately was clear as the symptoms were pretty bad! - blurred vision and massive headaches (and slurring speech). She is making reasonable recovery now - but no-one seems to know what she should do about the MTX that she is now overdue taking it. Her fingers are just starting to get sore!

Has anyone ever been in this situation (or know someone who has)? Normally she's advised to take it, even when she's on antibiotics (as she's on them such a lot) - but I'm not sure in this instance!!

We've left a message on the RA helpline - but this can take 2 weeks to get back to you!!!

We see the GP later on today - but I am quite sure they will say we don't know... that's what they usually say whenever asked about MTX!!!

i hope no-one has had a head injury - but I guess it would be the same for other sorts of trauma!

Hi Anne

So sorry to hear about your daughter's accident, what a worrying time but glad to hear she is on the road to recovery.

My thoughts, and that's all they are, would be to leave out the Methotrexate for a week or so until all her symptoms have settled. It's so slow acting and remains in the system for 3 months or more so a week should make little difference to the overall long term effect. I imagine the finger pain she is feeling is more down to the accident than the RA raising its ugly head so quickly. I've been off it for 8 weeks and RA symptoms are only just starting to reappear.

The GP should be able to offer some advice, much as they might be reluctant to! Perhaps the pharmacist could advise?

Hi Anne

So sorry to hear about your daughter's accident and glad she is now doing well and things are settling down.

Do you have a number to ring for the rheumatology department, as opposed to the RA helpline? If so, perhaps you could ring them and explain the situation. I would also suggest your pharmacist, as Lyn has said. And of course, there's always the NRAS helpline.

Sorry to hear the news about your daughter, thank goodness she is now on the mend, must have been very worrying for you and the family.

Surely the GP should be able to give guidance, if he/she doesn't know they should contact the rheumatologist to find out asap.

Hi Everyone

She is making slow progress, but at least it is progress. Still on lots of pain killers.

We got different answers depending on who we asked about the MTX:
Chemist said take it as usual, GP said take it as usual (can't think of a reason why not), but Rheum Consultant said don't take it!!!

So we are assuming that the Rheum Consultant knows more about what the reality would be! I was very impressed with the nurse helpline as we got phoned back within 2 hours... with the answer!!! I guess having a head injury and CT scan are a bit unusual requests for the helpline.

So pleased your precious daughter is making progress. I would always take the advice of the consultant as they have an in depth knowledge.
